SNA Meeting: 12/6 RN-BSN Online Degrees

Hey everyone. We're down to the final days of the semester. We are also having our last SNA meeting of the semester at 1PM in Locke 313. For this meeting, we have Nancy Ryan from Grand Canyon University. Are you interested in possibly going from RN to BSN while taking classes at home? GCU offers a online baccalaureate nursing program. Dear Graduating Students,

Unfortunately there seems to be some misunderstanding regarding the standards of dress and music for the pinning ceremony. Please note clarifications below:

Dress:

White Delta Dove Uniforms with Patches. The only variation from this that was approved was a dress option for females. Should someone choose a dress option, it must meet the same standards of body coverage as the Dove uniform dress e.g. length is at the knee, fit is professional (not form-fitting and no revealing of breasts).

Music:

Music will be chosen by faculty and myself and will be in keeping with both the celebratory and professional nature of the pinning ceremony.

Decorum:
As we have discussed in the past, please notify family and friends who are attending about the Atherton theater rules regarding balloons and air-horns as outlined in Prof. Neville's letter. In addition, please remind them of expected Pinning Ceremony decorum.

We are interested in each student receiving the applause and recognition they deserve and individuals who continue to hoot and holler so the next persons name cannot be heard are depriving that person and their family of an opportunity.

Hurst Review Information Session RESCHEDULED to 11/29

Pinning Photographer

Hello, everyone!

I was wondering how you all felt about hiring a photographer for the
pinning ceremony? I have already received permission from Ms. Neville.
I found a photography company in Stockton, called Family Photography.
They are willing to come to the ceremony at about 6:15 to take a few
group shots of all of us together. Then, during the ceremony, they
will take 1-2 shots of each of us being pinned and then one at the
decorated arch. This will cost us $10 per person for their time. The
pictures will be posted on their website within 24 hours for us to
choose from to purchase if we wish to do so. By the way, the website
is secure. You need a code to access it, so our pictures won't be
available to the public. After your purchase, they ship the pictures
within 72 hours. The photographer also said that if any of us do not
like the pictures and do not want to purchase any, they will give you

Hi all,

I have loaded your lecture and exam schedule for this rotation. I may need to make some adjustments because of the long lectures and 2 holidays, but we will see how it goes.

I also have the Instructional Manual on docushare for you to print, and I would like you to bring it Tuesday. I will have to make some adjustments to the grading schedule, but will try to have it in print for you by Thursday or next week at the latest.

N8: 2nd Rotation News

Hello all,

I am sending this email out to give you an idea of the plan for Nursing 8.

For the first week, we will meet on campus for orientation. the schedule is as follows:

Tuesday, October 19, 2010 0730-1500. Please wear your uniform. We will meet in Locke 229 for skills lab, then we will visit the hospitals for orientation.

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 0730-1500. We will meet in Locke 118 for skills lab. You do not need to wear your uniforms.

PLEASE BRING YOUR CLINICAL REQUIREMENTS TO THE CLASS ON TUESDAY (Malpractice, TB, immunization records, drug screen if needed, CPR card-all up to date).

Also, you will want to download the Instructional Manual for Nursing 8 that is located on my Docushare page. Don't print until the week before as I may make some changes and/or additions. I will send an email when it is ready. I will put the reading/exam schedule on Docushare before we begin as well. Please note: if you already have the text from Nursing 6 (London, et al.), you do not need to purchase the new text that is co-listed for the current N6 /N8 course. I will include a reading guide for both on Docushare, but do not spend the extra money if you still have the old text.

Thursdays, we will meet in Locke 118, and I will have the Study Guide and powerpoints available for you to download on Docushare. Again, you may want to wait, as I am revising them both as I go along.

Finally, because of the holidays, and some special events, we will have a little creative scheduling this rotation. I will send each individual clinical group a separate email regarding the clinical schedule.

Caps at Pinning

What's up my fellow future nurses? AJ, here. It's come to my attention that we have not discussed the possibility of nursing caps at pinning (This of course only applies to the females). Jennifer G.M. of our class talked to Mrs. Neville and she (Mrs. Neville) would like to know if that is what we want to do. She needs to know ASAP so that she can order them. I don't have the details on it but if you do have questions then e-mail me (ajarriola7@gmail.com). If I can't answer your question then I'll forward your questions to someone who can.

If you DO NOT want caps, e-mail me with your name saying no and your reason why. If you DO want to wear caps, then you do not have to message me. This is a vote pretty much. If you do not tell me no then it counts as a yes.

I will bring this up on Monday as well.

P.S. From what I've discussed with faculty and whatnot, it doesn't sound like pinning will be cancelled. There may be changes or whatnot but overall it's a positive outlook. Don't take this as a final verdict or anything, just letting you guys know what the overall feeling is (although it does sound good since caps are being asked about!). Also don't take this for granted as proper behavior is still paramount.

Pinning Ceremony Discussion

For those that don't remember, on Monday during the N10 class, I opened discussion on what people thought about what happened at the previous ceremony, as well as what we could do to show the faculty that we want a pinning ceremony, and that we want it to be a respectable one. I spoke at the faculty meeting on the 4th semester's behalf, but no actual discussion between faculty was made (at that time). These are the main proposals that were presented:

-Behavioral contracts

-Behavioral committees

-Limiting possible tickets per student

-Helping organize the pinning ceremony (seeing as certain faculty would always be the one to set everything up when they really don't need to)

For those that are interested in possibly helping out on a committee or would want to help setup with the pinning ceremony itself, shoot me an e-mail and I'll jot your name down, so that when push comes to shove, I know who to look to.

NCLEX type question week 8-22-10

When obtaining a wound culture from a surgical site, how should a nurse proceed?

Patches Available

Hey everyone. The new patches will be sold on 8/5 and 8/12 from 0900-1200 by the SNA. As far as if the office will be selling it on their own for those who fo not make these date times, I do not know but updates will be given. Patches will be sold at a flat rate of $8 each but if you are a member of the SNA, discounts may be given.

Last Semester ATI Fees

If you didn't already know, the newly named Nursing Success Center has run out of funding for things like ATI. For this last semester, we must pay $89.95 for books and tests that are ATI-related. Payment must be made by August 1st or else a late fee of $35 will be imposed. Check your delta e-mail for instructions. E-mail me if you have technical problems or difficulty understanding the steps but any other problems should be handled by the nursing office.

SNA Meeting- Monday 5/17

Hey everyone, this is just a reminder that there will be an SNA

Registration Changes

Hey guys. Be sure to pay your registration fees this coming semester, or else...

Beginning with registration for the Fall 2010 semester, students' fees are due at the time of registration. Students have 10 business days from the date they register to pay all tuition and/or enrollment fees, or they will be automatically dropped from class(es).

Students are responsible for:

• Paying all fees at the time of registration
• Keeping Delta College informed of all address changes
• Reading e-mail from Delta College
• Checking e-mail on a regular basis
  Meeting all published deadlines

Students are liable for payment of all charges for all courses for which the student registers, whether or not the student attends the course. To have the charges removed, the student must personally drop the course by the Refund Deadline.

A student who has submitted a FAFSA, does not have a fee waiver, and has been notified by the Financial Aid and Veterans Services of the need for additional documents should, within ten (10) business days from notification, either submit a fee waiver application for pay their enrollment fees.

Volunteer Opportunity

On Thursday May 14 from 11am to 3pm, there will be a health fair at
Health Plan of San Joaquin. They are looking for student nurses to
volunteer at the fair taking blood pressures. You will need to come in

Hurst NCLEX Review Update

Hey everyone. For those that don't know, Hurst is trying to schedule a review at Delta College from June 1 through June 4. While this date is not definite, what is is that we need 20 students interested to even make that possible. This would make it a lot easier for those that cannot or do not wish to make the trek to distant cities. If interested, please send me your name and e-mail (ajarriola7@gmail.com) and I will forward them to Phil, the SJDC SNA president and he will send them to a Hurst representative. The review will cost $350.

Uniform Change Response

Dear Third Semester Students, Thank you for your input regarding the Delta nursing programs uniform change. I do appreciate that there are concerns for those who will only be wearing them one semester. I also appreciate that you are willing to express your concerns through petition and signatures. However, the uniform change is not a negotiable subject. The change comes from the need to come into compliance with our legal obligations to hospital contract stipulations that state students must wear a unique uniform that is not like other hospital personnel. That is why all students must change for Fall 2010. The petition states that you will need two uniforms. I don't believe that will be the case as they can be laundered between clinical assignments. The usual cost for the white uniform worn at Certification and Pinning is easily $75.00 and you will already have that white uniform to wear once you purchase your new Delta uniform. While some females may wish to wear a white dress, historically, as many choose to wear pants. There is no "traditional" nursing dress - it has been a choice in the past. As a class, you will be able to vote to wear caps or not. To bring the cost of a new uniform into perspective, I would remind you that grant monies have paid for all students' ATI costs up to this point - a savings of approximately $300 that the students coming after you will not realize. Patch Design Contest

Dear Faculty and Students,

Unfortunately, you received an email today regarding the Delta Nursing Patch design contest that was to have been sent out on March 25th. Because it was not sent out at the correct time, I have revised the dates. Please see the corrected email below:

Greetings to all ADN, LVN and PT Students,

We are pleased to announce the opening of the contest for best Delta Nursing Patch design. We are looking for elements that can be used in the LVN, PT and ADN patches. The criteria are as follows:

1. Patch design competition is open to current ADN, LVN and PT students.

2. The patch is round with a diameter of 3 - 3.5 inches.

3. Blue must be incorporated/emphasized in the ADN patch; Gold in the LVN patch; and Green in the PT patch. Other colors may also be included in the design. Designs

4. Design elements may address representations of nursing, Delta College or a combination.

5. All designs must be submitted to the Nursing office by Friday, April 30, 2010 at 4 pm.

6. A committee of faculty members will judge the designs.

7. Winners will be announced on Friday, May 7, 2010.

8. Winner(s) will receive $100.00.

9. Designs are preferred in an electronic format, however hand-drawn designs will also be accepted.

N6 Exam 1 Grades

TB Tests

We are updating our hospital contracts and note that all hospitals now require a TB test every six months. In the past, the program has only required a yearly TB. Please check your records and if your TB test has not been done in the past six months, submit a new result to the office by April 30. If you have a positive history and a chest x-ray every two years, you will need a symptom review every six months.

If you submitted your original requirements to Certified Background, you will need to upload your TB results (every six months) to their site.

Uniform Change

You guys might wanna check your delta e-mails. You might not like what you find....

Dear Students,

There will be a change the ADN uniform effective Fall 2010. The decision has been made based on suggestions from hospitals, faculty and current practice of other ADN programs. The change will be to white uniforms made by Dove, Inc. Soon, Dove, Inc. will construct a webpage for Delta where students will order all uniforms. The new policy will be that all students will purchase a new uniform from Dove, Inc. The required uniform will consist of a white zip-up top (approx. $45), and white unisex pants (approx $29). A white mock turtle neck and white jacket will also be available through Dove, but not required if students do not need long sleeves. Students may need the jacket or mock turtle neck for warmth or to cover tattoos.

All current ADN students will be required to change to the new uniform for Fall 2010. While this may seem like a burden to students who are in the last year of the ADN program, it will serve as the white uniform that is usually purchased for certification and pinning. We believe that the uniform will be very helpful in improving our professional image in the community. All students will still purchase patches from the SNA. Instructions for sewing patches on the uniform and jacket will be given. All patches must be sewn on - not pinned or ironed.

Sample uniforms for fitting will be available in May and students will be notified of days they can try on the new uniforms to ensure correct sizing.

Hurst NCLEX Review

Hey everyone. Just like to let you know that Hurst is wanting to bring an NCLEX review session to Delta. However, we need at least 20 people (over all semesters) to allow that to happen. If you haven't already signed up during class in N7 with Tammy, e-mail me at ajarriola7@gmail.com with your name and e-mail and as soon as we get any information we will forward it to you.

This is not a binding contract, it's just to show that you are interested. All in all I believe that the total fee would be $350.

ATI Books

For those who haven't done so, pick up your ATI books from the nursing office by March 19th. There was an e-mail sent out by Julie Lang so check your Delta e-mail address to see if you're on her list.

Nursing Course Evaluations

For those finishing up their classes, the faculty would like you to evaluate both clinical and theory aspects of the class. For those in Nursing 7, Ms. Antaran would like to evaluate her class as she sent out an e-mail. Please access your delta e-mails to find the link. This would also apply to students in other classes such as N6.

(I would post the link myself but I don't want random people who haven't taken a nursing class themselves to evaluate the classes. It's in Docushare under the Divisions and Departments, then Health & Sciences division.)

Nursing Workshops

Dear Nursing Students:

The Nursing Student Success Program has 2 exciting workshops planned for you this spring. Our presenter will be Ms. Tonya Robinson, RN.

Tonya graduated from our ADN program in Spring 2008 and is now working as the Director of Nursing at Casa De Modesto Retirement Center in Modesto. She is also the Program Director for the Certified Nursing Assistance Program at Modesto Junior College.

Tonya volunteered to facilitate the workshops for us because she remembers how it was like to struggle as a nursing student so she wanted to help other students by sharing her knowledge and expertise. She believes it is a great way to give back to the nursing program, the College, and the community.

We highly appreciate Tonya taking the time out of her busy schedules to help us. This is the second time she will be presenting the workshops so if you missed it last Fall, don't miss it again this time.

New Scholarship Opportunity

The Health Professions Education Foundation offers many kinds of scholarships. One of which is specially designed for the students in the ADN programs. This scholarship offers up to $10,000 to help students pay for tuition, books, , supplies, required fees, and educational equipment costs.

Anyone who is enrolled or accepted into an associate degree in nursing program is eligible to apply. However, you must be a California resident AND a citizen or permanent resident of U.S. The requirement of the scholarship is that you will HAVE TO COMMIT TO & SIGN A WRITTEN 2-YEAR CONTRACT to serve in a MUA (Medically Underserved Areas) in California upon graduation.

You can download the application form online (go to link below). Application requirements and instructions are also explained in great detail on the Foundation's website. Please read and follow the instructions carefully.

They are accepting applications twice a year. Spring postmark deadline is March 24, 2010 and Fall deadline is September 11, 2010. The Foundation will notify applicants of the result within 120 days of the postmark deadline. Since they have a list of documents required including an OFFICIAL transcript, so don't wait too long to start your application if you are interested in applying for spring.

Another thing to note is that the scholarship will be funded for one academic year (or two semesters). Your graduation date may impact the amount of funding you are eligible to receive.
